Rapid Coffee Fix

There is a big difference between a quick rinse and a proper deep clean. Most coffee machine owners do the first regularly — and the second almost never. The result is a gradual buildup of coffee oils, mineral scale, bacteria, and stale residue that affects the taste of every cup and quietly damages the machine from the inside.

A proper deep clean goes beyond rinsing the drip tray. It covers every component that comes into contact with water, coffee, or steam — including parts most people do not even know exist. Done correctly and regularly, it extends the life of your machine significantly and keeps every cup tasting the way it should.

In this guide, we walk you through every step of a complete coffee machine deep clean — what to clean, how to clean it, how often, and what mistakes to avoid. The guide covers all common machine types used in Dubai including bean-to-cup machines, capsule machines, semi-automatic espresso machines, and filter coffee machines.

Why Coffee Machine deep cleaning is more important in Dubai

Dubai’s water supply, whether from desalination plants or treated sources, has a higher mineral content than tap water in most European or North American cities. This means that scale (calcium and magnesium deposits) builds up inside coffee machines faster here than almost anywhere else.

Combined with Dubai’s year-round heat and humidity, which can affect seals, gaskets, and the growth of bacteria in water tanks and drip trays, regular deep cleaning is not just good practice here — it is essential for machine health and hygiene.

Dubai-specific tip: Standard guidance suggests descaling every 3 months. In Dubai, every 6 to 8 weeks is more appropriate for machines used daily, due to the high mineral content in the local water supply.

What you need before you start

You do not need professional tools to deep clean most home coffee machines. Gather these items before you begin.

Descaling solution

Use the brand’s own descaler or a compatible product. Avoid vinegar — it can damage seals.

Cleaning tablets

Branded cleaning tablets break down coffee oils in the brew group and pipes.

Soft cloths

Microfibre cloths for wiping exterior surfaces, steam wands, and spouts.

Small brush

For cleaning around the brew head, group head, and hard-to-reach areas.

Warm water

Always use fresh, ideally filtered water for rinsing cycles after any cleaning product.

Large container

To collect water during descaling and cleaning cycles. Should hold at least 1.5 litres.

Never use: Vinegar (damages rubber seals and leaves an odour), bleach, abrasive scrubbers, or dishwasher detergent on any internal component. These can cause irreversible damage to your machine.

Step-by-step deep cleaning guide

STEP 1

Empty and clean the water tank

Why it matters

The water tank is one of the most overlooked parts of the machine. Stagnant water sitting in a warm environment can develop biofilm — a thin layer of bacteria and algae that is invisible but affects the taste of your coffee and the health of the machine.

How to do it

  • Remove the water tank completely.
  • Empty any remaining water — never leave old water sitting in the tank.
  • Wash the inside of the tank with warm water and a small amount of washing-up liquid.
  • Use a soft brush to scrub the walls and the base, paying attention to any discolouration.
  • Rinse thoroughly until no soap residue remains.
  • Dry the inside with a clean cloth before refilling.
  • Check the float sensor (a small plastic piece on a rod inside the tank) — make sure it moves freely up and down.

Pro tip: In Dubai, empty and refill the water tank every day. Never leave water sitting in it overnight, especially in summer when temperatures accelerate bacterial growth.

STEP 2

Clean the drip tray and grounds container

Why it matters

The drip tray collects overflow water, coffee drips, and milk residue. If not cleaned regularly it becomes a breeding ground for mould and bacteria, and the smell can transfer to your coffee. The grounds container holds used coffee pucks and develops a strong, rancid odour if left too long.

How to do it

  • Remove the drip tray and grounds container (if applicable).
  • Empty all liquid and used coffee grounds.
  • Wash both components with warm water and mild washing-up liquid.
  • Use a brush to clean the grooves and corners where residue accumulates.
  • Rinse thoroughly and allow to air dry before reinserting.
  • Wipe the area inside the machine where the tray sits — this area also collects residue.

Important: Never put the drip tray or grounds container in the dishwasher unless your machine’s manual specifically says it is safe to do so. High heat can warp plastic components.

STEP 3

Clean the brew head and group head

Why it matters

The brew head (on capsule and bean-to-cup machines) and group head (on espresso machines) are where coffee is extracted. Over time, coffee oils build up on the shower screen, gaskets, and inner surfaces. This causes bitter, over-extracted flavours and can eventually block the flow of water.

How to do it — bean-to-cup and capsule machines

  • Remove any capsule and open the brew head fully.
  • Wipe the inside of the brew head with a damp cloth to remove any visible coffee residue.
  • Use a small brush to clean the piercing needle area carefully.
  • Run 2 to 3 hot water cycles (without a capsule or coffee) to flush the brew head internally.
  • If your machine supports cleaning tablets, run one cleaning cycle per the manufacturer’s instructions — this dissolves coffee oil buildup inside the brew group.

How to do it — semi-automatic espresso machines

  • Remove the portafilter and shower screen (if removable).
  • Soak the shower screen in warm water with a small amount of espresso machine cleaner for 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Scrub gently with a brush and rinse thoroughly.
  • Perform a backflush cycle using an espresso machine cleaning tablet if your machine has a three-way solenoid valve (most commercial and prosumer machines do).
  • Rinse the group head by running water through it without a portafilter for 10 seconds.

STEP 4

Remove, rinse, and reinsert the brew unit

Why it matters

On bean-to-cup machines, the removable brew unit (also called the infuser or brewing group) compresses the coffee grounds and brews each cup. It accumulates coffee oils and fine grounds every time it is used. If not cleaned regularly, it starts jamming, causing brew unit errors and affecting extraction quality.

How to do it

  • Open the service door on the side of the machine (usually the left side).
  • Press the release button or lever and slide the brew unit out.
  • Hold it under warm running water and rinse it thoroughly — turn it to rinse every surface and channel.
  • Do not use soap or detergent on the brew unit — water only.
  • Allow it to drain for a moment, then reinsert it while it is still slightly damp. A dry brew unit can be harder to reinsert.
  • Close the service door firmly until it clicks.

Frequency: Rinse the brew unit every 2 weeks for regular home use. For high-volume use in a cafe or office, rinse it weekly or as recommended in your machine’s manual.

STEP 5

Clean the steam wand thoroughly

Why it matters

The steam wand is used to steam and froth milk. Milk residue that dries inside or on the outside of the steam wand is one of the fastest-growing sources of bacteria in any coffee machine. A wand that is not cleaned after every use develops hardened milk deposits that eventually block the steam holes and reduce steaming performance.

How to do it

  • Immediately after steaming milk, purge the wand by opening the steam valve for 2 to 3 seconds to clear residue from inside the tube.
  • Wipe the outside of the wand immediately with a damp cloth while it is still warm — dried milk is much harder to remove.
  • For a deep clean, soak a cloth in warm water mixed with a small amount of milk frother cleaner, wrap it around the wand, and leave it for 5 minutes.
  • If the steam holes are blocked, use a pin or a steam wand cleaning needle to carefully clear each hole.
  • Run steam through the wand again after cleaning to clear any loosened residue.

Never: Leave milk residue on the steam wand overnight. Dried, hardened milk is extremely difficult to remove and can permanently reduce steam performance and hygiene.

STEP 6

Run a full descaling cycle

Why it matters

Descaling removes the calcium and mineral deposits (scale) that build up inside the machine’s boiler, heating element, and internal pipes. Scale reduces heating efficiency, restricts water flow, raises energy consumption, and eventually causes the machine to stop working. It is the single most important maintenance step for any coffee machine used with hard water — and in Dubai, all water is relatively hard.

How to do it

  • Use the official descaling solution for your machine brand, or a compatible descaler product. Do not substitute with vinegar.
  • Mix the descaling solution with water in the water tank according to the package instructions — usually one sachet or tablet dissolved in the full tank.
  • Place a large container (at least 1.5 litres) under the coffee and water spouts to collect the descaling liquid.
  • Enter descaling mode on your machine — the method varies by brand and model. Check your user manual for the exact procedure.
  • Allow the full descaling cycle to run without interruption. This typically takes 20 to 35 minutes.
  • Once the cycle is complete, empty and rinse the water tank thoroughly.
  • Refill with fresh clean water and run 2 to 3 full rinsing cycles to flush all traces of descaling solution from the machine.

Do not interrupt the descaling cycle. Stopping a descaling cycle midway leaves descaling solution inside the machine, which can damage seals and internal components if left to sit.

STEP 7

Clean the grinder — bean-to-cup machines only

Why it matters

The grinder is the most mechanically complex part of a bean-to-cup machine and is often the most neglected. Coffee oils coat the grinder burrs over time, turning rancid and affecting the flavour of every cup. Fine coffee dust accumulates in the grind chute and can eventually cause the grinder to jam.

How to do it

  • Remove the bean hopper and empty all remaining coffee beans.
  • Wipe the inside of the hopper with a dry cloth to remove oil and dust — do not use water inside the hopper.
  • Use a soft brush to sweep the grinder burrs and the grind chute, removing accumulated coffee dust.
  • Use grinder cleaning tablets (available from most coffee machine retailers) — add them to the hopper and run them through the grinder. They absorb coffee oils and help clean the burrs without moisture.
  • Adjust the grind setting to its coarsest position before running the cleaning tablets, then readjust to your preferred setting afterward.

Pro tip: Never put pre-ground coffee, flavoured beans, or oily beans into a bean-to-cup grinder. Oily beans in particular are one of the most common causes of grinder damage and jamming in Dubai.

STEP 8

Wipe down the exterior and spout area

Why it matters

The exterior of the machine and the area around the coffee and water spouts accumulate coffee splatter, water stains, and fingerprints. While this does not affect the internal function of the machine, it allows residue to drip back into cups and creates an unhygienic surface around the brewing area.

How to do it

  • Use a damp microfibre cloth to wipe the entire exterior of the machine.
  • Pay particular attention to the underside and around the spout where coffee drips collect and dry.
  • Use a cotton swab or small brush to clean inside the spout nozzles.
  • Dry the exterior with a clean dry cloth to prevent water stains.
  • Do not spray water or cleaning products directly onto the machine — always apply to the cloth first.

Common deep cleaning mistakes to avoid

  • Mistake 1

Using vinegar instead of descaler

Vinegar is acidic and can corrode rubber seals and internal components. It also leaves a persistent smell that affects coffee taste. Always use a proper descaling solution.

  • Mistake 2

Interrupting the descaling cycle

Stopping a cycle halfway leaves descaling chemicals inside the machine. Always complete the full cycle and always run the rinsing phase after.

  • Mistake 3

Washing the brew unit with soap

Soap residue inside the brew unit affects coffee flavour and can damage rubber components. Always rinse with water only — no detergent.

  • Mistake 4

Ignoring the steam wand

The steam wand is the fastest part of the machine to develop bacteria and scale. Wiping it only once a week is not enough — clean it immediately after every use.

  • Mistake 5

Skipping the rinse cycles after descaling

Descaling solution is acidic and must be completely flushed from the machine before brewing. Skipping rinse cycles means drinking traces of chemical in your coffee.

  • Mistake 6

Putting components in the dishwasher

Unless your manual specifically states otherwise, dishwasher heat and detergent can warp plastic parts and damage seals. Always wash by hand with warm water.

When deep cleaning is not enough

Regular deep cleaning prevents most problems, but some issues require professional attention. Contact a certified coffee machine technician in Dubai if:

  • Descaling does not clear the descaling alert — scale may have hardened beyond what a standard cycle can remove
  • The machine produces weak, slow, or oddly flavoured coffee even after a full clean
  • There is an unusual noise, burning smell, or visible damage to any component
  • The brew unit or grinder jams repeatedly despite regular cleaning
  • Error codes persist after cleaning — this may indicate a sensor or component fault

Good practice: Even with perfect home cleaning, have your machine professionally serviced once every 6 months. A technician can clean internal components that are not accessible during a home clean, inspect parts for wear, and recalibrate the machine for optimal performance.
